KIRSTEN MITCHELL

Greetings,
I'm Kirsten Mitchell and I'm a senior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, studying broadcast journalism. In May 2017 I will graduate and begin pursuing my life-long goal of becoming a reporter.
I've gained real-world experience throughout my college career through classwork and internships. My internships at WCCO, WMAQ and KARE have provided me with unique experiences in different television markets.
At WCCO, I spent my days in the newsroom, gathering news and pitching stories at editorial meetings. I shadowed reporters regularly and recorded my own stand-ups as well as re-created some of their stories to practice my writing and editing skills. I also spent time with producers and photographers, learning their role in the newsroom and what they do on a daily basis.
At WMAQ, I worked in the Creative Services department, a department crucial to the promotion and image of the station. Here I learned how to write scripts for news promotional videos and commercials while also enhancing my editing skills on multiple software programs like Final Cut, Premiere, and After Affects. As a team, we promoted multiple large scale events for the station such as "Clear the Shelters" and the 2016 Olympic Games.
At KARE, I worked on the Sunrise Show twice a week, running the teleprompter and stepping in as floor director. I also pitched story ideas and shadowed reporters twice a week. I wrote and edited their stories on deadline to practice time management.
I've had a great time learning at my internships and through my coursework at the University of Minnesota and am excited to begin working and see where the life of a reporter takes me. I'm always up for a challenge and love working on various types of stories!
